Should you put your prices on your website

For most service businesses, yes, and the usual fear turns out to be backwards.

What actually happens when you hide it

The standard argument is that pricing lets people rule you out before you can sell them. That is true. What it misses is that they were going to rule you out anyway, they just do it by leaving instead of by asking.

Hiding price filters serious buyers harder than it filters browsers. Someone comparing three providers in one sitting will contact the two who published and skip the one who made them ask, because asking costs them time and social effort.

How to publish it without losing flexibility

"Our work is custom, we cannot publish a price"

Then publish the floor and what moves it. Custom does not mean unknowable, and every buyer already has a number in their head. Publishing yours only removes people whose number was never going to meet it.

The cases where hiding it is correct

Enterprise deals, heavily negotiated contracts and anything genuinely priced per situation. For everyday service work, hiding it mostly costs you the people who were ready.

There is a measurable version of this. Publish for a month and compare inquiry volume against inquiry quality. Most businesses see fewer messages and more booked work, which is the trade worth having.

Questions we get from business owners

Will competitors undercut me?

They already know roughly what you charge. Customers are the ones being kept in the dark, and they are the only party the secrecy actually costs you.

What if my pricing varies a lot?

Publish the range and name the two or three factors that decide where a job lands in it. That is more useful to a buyer than a single averaged number.

Where should pricing live?

Its own page, linked from the main navigation. People search for pricing directly, and burying it inside a services page loses that search.
