What a small business website actually costs
Real ranges, what moves the number, and the costs that show up after launch.
The honest ranges
Quotes for the same brief routinely come back between two thousand and fifty thousand dollars. That is not because some are dishonest. It is because the word website covers a five page brochure and a lead generation system with tracking, and nobody says which they are quoting.
Template builds sit around one to three thousand. Semi-custom on a page builder runs three to ten. Genuinely custom lead generation sites run ten to fifty. Above that you are usually paying for scale, integrations or a brand process rather than a better website.
What actually moves the number
- Page count, because every unique page is copy, layout and testing rather than a duplicated template
- Whether the copy is written for you or supplied by you, which is frequently the single largest line item
- Whether tracking is wired in, since call tracking and attribution are build work, not a plugin
- Custom design versus a system, where hand designed layouts cost more and take longer
- Integrations, because anything talking to a CRM or booking tool adds testing time
"Why not just use a builder for forty dollars a month?"
For a business card site, do. The maths changes when the site is supposed to produce customers: you cannot control the structure enough to rank well, and after four years of subscription you have spent real money and own nothing.
The costs nobody quotes
Hosting, domain, email, and the change you will want in month three. Ask what a small edit costs before you sign, not after.
Ask three questions of any quote: what happens if the deadline slips, who owns the code when it is finished, and what does a text change cost in six months. The answers separate a build from a subscription faster than comparing the headline price does.
What a build costs and how long it takes
| Package | Guaranteed live | Investment |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 7 days | $5,453 |
| Professional | 5 days | $12,178 |
| Signature | 3 days | $26,940 |
Packages are fixed and published. The guaranteed launch date is part of the agreement, not a target, and the code is handed over on delivery.
Start Your WebsiteQuestions we get from business owners
Is a more expensive website better?
Only if the extra buys something you need. Paying more for a hand designed layout is a real choice; paying more for the same template with a bigger logo is not.
Should I pay monthly or once?
Once, for the build, if you want to own it. Monthly is reasonable for hosting or ongoing marketing work, but a monthly fee that stops your site working when you cancel is rent, not a service.
What is the cheapest sensible option?
A small custom build with clear structure will outperform an expensive template almost every time. Spend on structure and copy before you spend on visual polish.
